[...] To get a sense of the high priced inventory that Nucor is working off I found this in their most recent 10-K filing: The average scrap and scrap substitute cost per ton used remained at historically high levels in 2007 and 2008, increasing 13% from $246 in 2006 to $278 in 2007 and increasing an additional 58% to $438 in 2008. During both years, Nucor used a raw material surcharge as a component of our product pricing to help offset the impact of volatile scrap prices. Okay, we all saw prices increase last year but many had said the price increases were not sustainable (including us very early last year during our annual predictions). [...]

[...] It is hard to believe that we are coming up on the close of the first quarter of 2008. What a quarter it has been! We thought it would be fun to review our predictions from the beginning of the year and grade ourselves. At the same time, we will chime in with what we believe is in store for metals buyers and traders in Q2 and beyond. In case you missed our original predictions, you can find them here.
Good point. But pricing predictions of course for metals are so dependent upon form, type, grade, volume, point of origin, destination, export tariffs, import duties, % of content in final product etc. We couldn't possibly provide this in a blog format. However, maybe you have provided us with a good idea. We can charge a subscription for it...hmmmm....LAR
