[...] We would not be doing our jobs if we didn't comment on one of the biggest stories of the week involving rare earth metals. Actually, let us qualify that statement, it is the biggest story on rare earth metals to finally reach the mainstream press. The timely piece from Bloomberg referenced an announcement made yesterday by the Deputy Chief of Inner Mongolia who is in talks with the Central Government to build stockpiles of these strategic rare earths in order to support prices. This particular announcement is new news. The older news, reported by The Australian and picked up by others, involves China limiting exports of vital rare-earth metals as well as stockpiling these metals. We first reported on these export restraints back on June 30th in this piece entitled: Obama Administration Fights Chinese Export Restraints on Key Raw Materials. [...]

Commodity prices were down due to the world crisis. There were some recovery lately but is still far off from last year. This is true for coke, zinc as well as bauxite that China was accused of NOT selling. China wants to maintain the prices of this commodities just like oil producers restrict oil output to maintain prices or Brazil reduce coffee production and Canada limit the sale or raw timber. If China open the flood gate of some of these materials, other producers like Australia, Chile, Brazil, and many African countries will be hurt. Will China help a friend? Go to Asia, Africa, Middle East or South America and ask!
