GDP = Consumer Consumption + Industrial Investment + Government Spending + Exports - Imports. The problem is that it can be easily manipulated by the government. All they have to do is increase their spending and/or print a bunch of money and give it to consumers and industry to spend. Then Shazam! GDP rises. Oh, I am quite sure that their GDP went up as they stated, but I am also positive that the country (and the world) is worse off for it.
