3D Printing and Manufacturing: Not Just For Toys Anymore

by on

Recently, on a “babymoon” with my wife in Barcelona, Spain, we took the requisite pilgrimage to Antoni Gaudí’s famously unfinished sanctuary, La Sagrada Família.

While the exterior is thoroughly wacky and well-worn, the bowels of the building are reserved for the modern workshops of those who are (very slowly but surely) continuing Gaudí’s plan after his untimely demise in the early 20th century. Behind glass doors, countless tools, materials and models were sitting silently when we visited, waiting for architects to return to work.

But to the right of a model of a Sagrada Família addition from the angle in this photo we took, what did we see? Some of the now-ubiquitous 3D printers, sharing a contemporary space with old-world designs.

There’s a Conference For That

3D printers are reinventing how to create and build things, not only in architecture, but in sectors MetalMiner follows closely – metals and manufacturing. That’s why we began covering 3D printing technology, and why we’ve partnered with “Inside 3D Printing Conference & Expo,” which attracted 3,000 attendees and top exhibitors like MakerBot, Stratasys, and 3D Systems to its inaugural event in New York.

This new conference heads to Chicago on July 10-11, and we thought we’d save you some bones if you wanted to check it out.

As “the” B2B tradeshow for the 3D printing industry, the event garners top venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, engineers, designers, professors, manufacturers, and artists to explore the impact of this rapidly growing field.

The summer edition, programmed by Hod Lipson, has already confirmed numerous speakers, including Scott Crump, Founder and Chairman of the Board at Stratasys, Bill Foster Congressman of the 11th Congressional District of Illinois, Ralph L. Resnick, President & Executive Director of the National Center for Defense Manufacturing & Machining (NCDMM), and Cydni Tetro, Entrepreneur in Residence for Disney.

Session topics include: Tools of Creation, Industrial Scale Additive Manufacturing Technologies, The Printed Athlete: How 3D Printing is Changing the Nature of Sports, and more.

The event’s networking reception and exhibit hall, featuring the likes of Stratasys, Mcor Technologies, Solid Concepts, InterPRO, and NRI, provide the ideal forum for professionals to network with like-minded peers and investors and explore the latest 3D printing equipment.
