Edmunds: Ford Considering Aluminum Bodies for its SUVs

by on

According to Edmunds.com, Ford is considering converting the next-generation Expedition to aluminum body, as well as the strong-selling mid-size Explorer crossover.

If the Expedition gets an all-aluminum body, the Lincoln Navigator likely would, too, since both are built on the F-150 pickup platform. The shift to lighter bodies, possibly built of aluminum body panels, has created speculation and hopes of new business among aluminum producers. Ford’s 2015 F150 is already being built with a mainly aluminum body.

The aluminum cash price traded sideways, keeping at $1,840 per metric ton on the LME on Tuesday, April 15. The 3-month price of aluminum remained essentially flat on the LME at $1,872 per metric ton. The Indian aluminum cash price remained essentially flat at INR 112.80 ($1.87) per kilogram.
