Due to Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards requiring automakers to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles, Ford turned to military grade aluminum alloy to make its F-150 truck 750 lbs. lighter.

Body Shop Business asked auto body industry professionals and trade associations what changes, exactly, more aluminum car and truck bodies would mean for shop owners and mechanics. Their responses are not what you might expect.

On Thursday, April 17, the cash price of primary aluminum experienced the biggest change, rising 0.9 percent on the LME to $1,833 per metric ton. After a 0.6 percent increase, the 3-month price of aluminum finished the day on the LME at $1,868 per metric ton. The Indian aluminum cash price showed little movement yesterday, hovering around INR 112.55 ($1.87) per kilogram.

Chinese aluminum prices closed flat for the day. The price of Chinese aluminum scrap remained essentially flat at CNY 12,250 ($1,970) per metric ton. The price of Chinese aluminum billet was unchanged at CNY 13,590 ($2,185) per metric ton. The price of Chinese aluminum bar held steady at CNY 14,200 ($2,283) per metric ton. The cash price of Chinese aluminum saw little movement yesterday, closing out around CNY 12,915 ($2,076) per metric ton.
