Fiat Chrysler says it will redesign the popular Ram standard-duty pickup in 2017 and overhaul the line of pickup trucks the following year, USA Today reported. The 2017 Ram could have an aluminum body, like the 2015 Ford F-150 coming this year, Fiat Chrysler Autogroup CEO Sergio Marchionne said.
Marchionne also said he is unsure aluminum is the right strategy yet, because the Ram line already offers the only diesel in the category and thus achieves the high-mpg benefits without the complications of aluminum. Aluminum is more expensive than steel, but weighs less – a key consideration as the same 54.5 mpg federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) mileage requirement begins pressing down on trucks as hard as cars in 2015.
