Autodesk Skyscraper: New Construction Sharing Platform Released at AIA14

Today, Autodesk introduced Project Skyscraper, a technology preview for its Revit 3D modeling software that will allow architects, engineers and contractors to collaborate on the Autodesk 360 cloud platform, eliminating the need for AEC firms to invest in costly IT infrastructure to work together on projects.

Project teams spread across other cities or even other countries can view, search and provide feedback on 3D design and construction models on any device via browsers or smartphone or tablet apps. Four major architecture firm customers are testing out the tool in beta right now, and Autodesk expects a full commercial software release by the end of the year.

Autodesk Skyscraper

Local collaboration and physical parametric modeling have allowed Autodesk’s previous tools to give architects, engineers and construction professionals better information exchange and cost certainty for major purchases such as structural steel, yet all of the previous solutions were application-based. What sets Skyscraper apart is that it is browser-based an all information is stored and shared via cloud infrastructure. Collaboration tools such as Autodesk Buzzsaw, Autodesk 360 Glue and Revit are all represented on a single web-based platform via Skyscraper. This is the type of seamless collaboration long promised by building information modeling software, realized via cloud storage and browser-based interactions.

Reed Construction Data Introduces Reed Insight

Reed Construction Data was here in Chicago at the American Institute of Architects Convention and Design Exposition, as well. The Norcross, Ga-based construction information service showcased Reed Insight at the show. Another browser-based solution, Reed Insight’s  platform provides a detailed view of construction activity across the continent, including historical data, current-year projections and five-year forecasts for all North American markets. The leads and financial information are developed by industry-leading economists and sourced from RCD’s RSMeans database.

For estimators and other construction procurement professionals Reed Insight gives users intelligent leads, an analysis platform that lets you know which projects are worth bidding on and RCD’s economic forecasting data all in a single platform.

The line between architecture and construction is becoming more and more blurred as beginning-to-end project tools like Skyscraper and Reed Insight continue to disrupt the AEC industries.
