Nucor Corp. has filed suit in federal court to block construction of a $1.3 billion steel mill in Arkansas, accusing developer Big River Steel LLC of violating obligations under the Clean Air Act.
Pollutants from the planned mill would harm the air quality in Arkansas’ Mississippi County, including at a Nucor facility there, according to a 50-page complaint filed Aug. 7 in federal court in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Nucor operates a potentially competing mill 20 miles away and had previously challenged Big River’s permits in regulatory filings. Nucor filed several objections to the mill during the approval process. An Arkansas environmental regulatory panel issued an air quality permit for the planned mill in April and rejected most of Nucor’s arguments.
