Court Agrees to Stop Immediate Unionization at New York Novelis Plant

An injunction filed against Novelis Aluminum in Oswego, N.Y.,  to allow the United Steelworkers of America to represent the plant’s employees immediately and force the plant to bargain was denied by a federal court judge, who also ruled for the union in other areas.

In February, a vote on whether or not to unionize the plant failed by 14 votes. But the USW claimed Novelis had interfered with the vote.

The company is barred from threatening employees with reduced hours, more onerous working conditions or say the plant may shut down, and is restricted from performing a slew of other activities that could be deemed as interference

On Monday, September 29, the day’s biggest mover was the aluminum 3-month price, which saw a 0.2% decline on the LME to $1,956 per metric ton. On the LME, the primary aluminum cash price declined 0.1% to $1,924 per metric ton. The cash price of primary Indian aluminum saw little movement yesterday, closing out around INR 119.80 ($1.95) per kilogram.

Chinese aluminum prices closed flat for the day. For the fifth consecutive day, the price of Chinese aluminum scrap held flat at CNY 12,250 ($1,981) per metric ton. For the fifth day in a row, the price of Chinese aluminum billet remained essentially flat at CNY 13,590 ($2,198) per metric ton. The price of Chinese aluminum bar continues hovering around CNY 14,200 ($2,296) per metric ton for the fifth day in a row. The Chinese aluminum cash price saw little movement at CNY 13,960 ($2,257) per metric ton.
