Following a 0.4 percent increase in the week prior, the primary aluminum cash price fell one percent on the LME last week to $1,974 per metric ton. The aluminum 3-month price fell 0.9 percent on the LME to $2,015 per metric ton after rising 0.4 percent the week before.

Chinese aluminum prices were mixed for the week.

The cash price of Chinese aluminum dropped 0.1 percent this week, closing out the third consecutive week of falling prices. Following a steady week, prices for Chinese aluminum bar closed flat above $2,200 per metric ton. Chinese aluminum billet traded sideways last week, hovering above $2,500 per metric ton.

The price of Korean 3003 coil premium over 1050 sheet did not change since the previous week. Korean 5052 coil premium over 1050 sheet also remained unchanged for the week. European 5083 plate remained essentially flat from the previous week at below $3,950 per metric ton. Prices for European 1050 aluminum remained constant, closing the week at above $3,050 per metric ton.

Automotive MMI® prices dropped the week of May 21, 2012. The week’s biggest mover on the Automotive MMI® was the price of US HDG, which saw a 2.3 percent decline. Last week marked the fourth in a row of declining prices for the metal.

The price of Chinese lead fell one percent over the past week. This was the third week in a row of declining prices.

Closing out the third week of declining prices, the cash price of primary copper dropped by one percent on the LME, finishing at $7,630 per metric ton. The price of Chinese lead fell one percent over the past week to CNY 15,300 ($2,417) per metric ton. This was the third week in a row of declining prices. The 3-month price of copper dropped 0.9 percent on the LME this week, closing out the third consecutive week of falling prices at $7,590 per metric ton. Following a steady week, prices for Korean 5052 coil premium over 1050 sheet closed flat at KRW 4,360 ($3) per kilogram.

At $1,425 per ounce, the price of US platinum bar finished the week down 1.9 percent. For the third week in a row, the price of US palladium bar dropped, falling 1.3 percent to $595.00 per ounce.

At KRW 4,210 ($3) per kilogram, the price of Korean 3003 coil premium over 1050 sheet did not change since the previous week. Closing at KRW 4,360 ($3) per kilogram, Korean 5052 coil premium over 1050 sheet remained unchanged for the week. European 5083 plate remained essentially flat from the previous week at EUR 3,004 ($3,944) per metric ton. Chinese aluminum closed mixed on Wednesday. Chinese aluminum billet finished the day down 0.3 percent to CNY 16,000 ($2,533) per metric ton. The price of Chinese aluminum scrap remained essentially flat at CNY 16,650 ($2,636) per metric ton. The price of Chinese aluminum bar was unchanged at CNY 14,050 ($2,224) per metric ton. The cash price of Chinese aluminum remained essentially flat at CNY 16,060 ($2,542) per metric ton.
